TOKYO WORKING CLASS
Tokyo street photography – 2019
In my mind, the city of Tokyo somehow represents the apex of human civilization. Past, present, and future coexist in a space-time bubble that is the perfect representation of the aspirations, achievements, and paradoxes of our species. The vastness of the city and the grandeur of the infrastructure are in stark contrast to the human dimension, however, only thanks to the ingenuity and tireless activity of human beings has all this been possible. Like the sap flowing in plants, men feed this chaotic and pulsating organism of concrete and steel, establishing an almost symbiotic relationship with it. A crowded organism, increasingly automated and digitized, in which human labor seems to have a role now superfluous, yet somehow still necessary(?). With this series, I wanted to pry into the hidden corners of the city, in search of the protagonists of Japan’s proverbial industriousness, Tokyo’s working class.
